Traditional Jujitsu

The term Jujitsu is a common English spelling of the Japanese word, "jujutsu". It means, literally, technique or art (jutsu) of suppleness, flexibility, pliancy, or gentleness". All these terms, however, represent a single principle; a specific way of using the human body as a weapon in unarmed combat.

Training at the Nagare-En-Martial Arts Academy practising Traditional Jujitsu is a very rewarding experience. Over time you learn not only how to look after yourself should you be attacked or threatened but also how to deal with confrontation and threatening environments.

As Jujitsu evolved among the samurai of feudal Japan and due to the difficulty of dispatching an armored opponent with striking techniques, the most efficient methods for neutralizing an enemy took the form of pins, joint locks, and throws.

These techniques were developed around the principle of using an attacker's energy against him, rather than directly opposing it. Due to modern society and its laws some of the techniques that were used in feudal Japan are not acceptable today and so the syllabus that is followed at the Nagare-En Martial Arts Academy has been adapted to incorporate the principles of traditional Jujitsu but in a modern day context.

All training sessions are held in a non threatening environment where students work at their own pace, have fun and develop naturally.
